Worked Example: Groups — Ryder Cup Style
Scenario
Two padel clubs — Club A and Club B — face off in a Ryder Cup style event. Each club fields a squad of 3 doubles pairs. Every Club A pair plays every Club B pair (9 matches total). The club that wins more matches takes the trophy.
Step 1: Tournament Setup
- New Tournament → Custom (or any type that supports groups)
- Name: “Inter-Club Ryder Cup”, Sport: Padel
- The tournament acts as a container for the cross-group matches
Step 2: Create the Groups
- Go to the Groups tab
- Create two groups:
- Group 1: “Club A” (purpose: Ryder Cup)
- Group 2: “Club B” (purpose: Ryder Cup)
Step 3: Add Teams to Each Group
Club A
- Pair A1: Alex & Anna
- Pair A2: Andy & Alice
- Pair A3: Aaron & Amber
Club B
- Pair B1: Ben & Bella
- Pair B2: Bob & Bianca
- Pair B3: Bill & Britta
Step 4: Generate Cross-Group Matches
- Create a round for the group matches
- Select Groups as the player source
- The system generates all cross-group pairings: every Club A pair vs every Club B pair
| Court | Match | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Court 1 | Alex/Anna vs Ben/Bella | Club A wins 24–20 |
| Court 2 | Andy/Alice vs Bob/Bianca | Club B wins 24–18 |
| Court 1 | Aaron/Amber vs Bill/Britta | Club A wins 24–16 |
| … 6 more cross-group matches … | ||
Step 5: Group-Level Scoring
After all 9 matches, the group leaderboard shows:
| Group | Matches Won | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Club A | 6 | 198 |
| Club B | 3 | 175 |
Club A wins the Ryder Cup 6–3!
Step 6: Points Conversion
When groups use different scoring formats (e.g., one round uses Americano and another uses Tennis), the system converts Tennis scores to a common points scale for the group leaderboard. A Tennis win counts as 24 points, ensuring all matches contribute equally to the group total.
When to Use Groups vs Pools
| Groups (Ryder Cup) | Pools (Pool + Knockout) |
|---|---|
| Matches are across groups (A vs B) | Matches are within pools (A plays A) |
| Group-level winner (club vs club) | Individual/team advancement to knockout |
| Fixed number of cross-matchups | Round-robin within each pool |
